Fees for Historic Plates in New Jersey

According to the official Form SP-121 and NJ MVC fee schedule, the fees are as follows:

  • Standard Historic Plates: $44
  • Courtesy Historic Plates: $74
  • Personalized Historic Plates: $94 (or $50 if you already own standard Historic plates)

Important notes:

  • Historic motorcycle license plates are not available for personalization.
  • Personalized plate requests are limited to six characters or less.
  • Historic registration must be renewed every three years. There is no fee for renewal.

  • Making a false statement on the application can result in a fine of up to $500, imprisonment for up to six months, or both, and possible suspension of registration privileges.

Street Rod Plates vs. Historic Plates

If your vehicle was manufactured before 1949 and has been modified, it may qualify for Street Rod plates instead of Historic plates.
